Description
Haworthia fasciata, commonly known as the “Zebra Plant” or “Zebra Haworthia,” is a popular succulent native to South Africa. Here’s how to care for it:
- Light: Haworthia fasciata prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some direct sunlight, especially in the morning or late afternoon, but intense sunlight can cause its leaves to become scorched.
- Watering: Like most succulents, Haworthia fasciata is drought-tolerant and prefers to dry out between waterings. Water the plant thoroughly when the soil is dry, but be careful not to overwater, as this can lead to root rot. During the winter months or periods of dormancy, reduce watering frequency.
- Soil: Use a well-draining soil mix specifically formulated for succulents and cacti. A mixture of potting soil, sand, and perlite works well to provide adequate drainage.
- Temperature: Haworthia fasciata prefers temperatures between 65°F to 80°F (18°C to 27°C). It can tolerate slightly cooler temperatures during the winter but should be protected from frost.
- Humidity: This succulent prefers low to moderate humidity levels. It is well-suited to indoor environments with average humidity levels, but avoid placing it near drafts or heating vents, which can cause the air to become too dry.
- Fertilization: Haworthia fasciata does not require frequent fertilization. You can fertilize it lightly with a diluted, balanced fertilizer during the growing season (spring and summer) to encourage healthy growth. However, be cautious not to over-fertilize, as succulents are sensitive to excess nutrients.
- Potting and Repotting: Plant Haworthia fasciata in a shallow container with drainage holes to prevent waterlogged soil. Repotting is typically necessary every two to three years or when the plant has outgrown its current container. When repotting, use fresh soil and gently loosen the roots before transferring the plant to its new pot.
- Propagation: Haworthia fasciata can be propagated easily through offsets (also known as “pups”) that grow from the base of the plant. Remove offsets with a sharp, sterile knife and allow the cuttings to callus for a few days before planting them in a well-draining potting mix. Keep the soil lightly moist until the cuttings establish roots.
With proper care, Haworthia fasciata can thrive and produce its distinctive zebra-like striped leaves, making it a beautiful addition to your indoor succulent collection.
